Preparing a Small School Band for UIL (Preparing the Contest Program)

Dr. Trayler explores timelines, programming, and techniques associated with the successful preparation of concert bands for UIL Contest performance.

Dr. Charles Trayler received the BME degree from Abilene Christian University, and the MME and doctorate degrees from Texas Tech University.  Dr. Trayler was Director of Bands at Petersburg, Sunray, and Dalhart public schools and at Abilene Christian University.  Dr. Trayler's bands have marched in five Texas gubernatorial Inaugural parades and the Texas Sesquicentennial Parade.  His public school bands were consistent UIL sweepstakes award winners and won Best in Class at many festivals including Cavalcade of Music, Canan City Festival, Tri-State Music Festival, and Worlds of Fun.  Dr. Trayler's 300+member ACU marching bands performed on numerous occasions for the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Oilers, and his symphonic band presented concerts on two occasions each for the College Band Directors National Association and the Texas Music Educators Association.  For several years his ACU symphonic bands recorded new works for Ludwig Publishers and Warner Bros.

Dr. Trayler has served as president for the Texas Bandmasters Association, Phi Beta Mu Alpha chapter, and TMEA Region I.  He is a charter member of Texas Music Adjudicators Association and served three terms as marching vice-president for TMAA,and served on the UIL Prescribed Music List committee.  In 1976 Dr. Trayler and the late Mike Barry of McMurry co-founded the Abilene Community Band.

Dr. Trayler was honored by the Texas Bandmasters Association with TBA's prestigious Lifetime Meritorius Achievement Award.  He is in demand as honor band clinician and contest adjudicator acrwoss the southwest.
