


Scott Coulson has been the Director of Bands at Poteet High School since the school’s opening in 1986. Prior to his tenure at Poteet, Mr. Coulson was an assistant band director at North Mesquite High School. He holds both a Bachelor and Master of Music Education degree from East Texas State University where he studied under James F. Keene.
Under his direction, the Poteet High School bands have received the University Interscholastic League’s “Sweepstakes” Award for twenty consecutive years. The Poteet Honors Band was selected as the Four States Texas Honor Band in 1997 and has won Best in Class and Best in Contest awards at music festivals across the United States. The Poteet Honors Band has excelled in the Texas Music Educators Association’s State Honor Band competition, placing as State Finalists in 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2007. In 2007, the Poteet Honors Band was named the 2008 TMEA State 4A Honor Band.
His marching bands have also excelled, winning Best in Class and Best in Contest awards at marching festivals in the North Texas area. The Pirate Band has participated in the Texas UIL 4A State Marching Contest ten times since 1990, and selected as finalists in 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2005, and 2007. The Pirate Band has won the Texas UIL 4A State Marching Championship three times: 1997, 2005, and 2007.
Mr. Coulson’s affiliations and awards include: Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Concert Band Vice-President of the Texas Music Adjudicators Association, past Marching Band Vice-President of the Texas Music Adjudicators Association, American School Band Director's Association, Phi Beta Mu International School Bandmaster Fraternity, was named to the John Philip Sousa Foundation's "Legion of Honor" in 2005, Who's Who Among America's Teachers, and the Mesquite Independent School District's "Apple Corps" Award.
