How to Motivate the Non-Varsity Band

This clinic will teach directors how to motivate those students who need it most.

Pete Tolhuizen is in his fourteenth year as Associate Director at Berkner High School. His responsibilities include conducting the Symphonic II Band, assisting with the marching band, and teaching beginning band students at Dartmouth Elementary.

A native of St. Joseph, Michigan, Mr. Tolhuizen graduated Magna Cum Laude from Western Michigan University. He has done additional graduate work at the University of North Texas.

His first teaching position was as the Director of Bands in the Berrien Springs (Mich.) Public Schools. In 1976, he returned to Western to study with then Director of Bands, Eddie Green. In 1977, he moved to Texas to become the Assistant Director at Lake Highlands High School. Prior to his appointment at Berkner, he was head director at Lake Highlands Junior High in Richardson for two years. In 2001, the Berkner Symphonic II Band performed at the 33rd Annual Spring Conference of Wind and Percussion Music at Western Michigan University.

In 2002, he was one of ten Richardson ISD teachers awarded the RISE Foundation "Excellence in Teaching" Award. Mr. Tolhuizen is affiliated with the Texas Bandmasters Association, the Texas Music Adjudicator Association, the Richardson Education Association, Phi Beta Mu, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He is also a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, having served as Region III Band Chair, Vice-President, and President. He and his wife Cheri have two daughters, Emily and Haley.

Michael Watts is currently the Director of Bands at Permian High School. He has taught twenty-one years in Odessa, Texas. He taught junior high school band at Bonham Junior High School for four years and was the Assistant Director of Bands for nine years at Permian High School before being named head director. As head director, the Permian High School Band has enjoyed success throughout the state and country and was highlighted by their participation in the 2004 "Tournament of Roses" Parade.
