Tuba Players and Repertoire: Giving Them What They Need To Succeed

While the demands of the tuba player in an ensemble fall mainly in the areas of good tone quality, low register, and rhythm, audition and solo repertoire often emphasize high register and technique. Dr. Wass will examine ways to take full advantage of the repertoire tuba players already study as well as supplement it with other materials to develop a complete musician capable of suceeding in any musical situation.

Kevin Wass, Visiting Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium, is currently a candidate for a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Michigan. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, and a Master of Music degree and Performer's Certificate from Indiana University.

He has performed with a wide range of ensembles, including the Disneyland All-American College Band, the Music Academy of the West Festival Orchestra, the Omaha and Lincoln Symphony Orchestras, and various brass chamber groups. Mr. Wass also has excelled in international tuba competitions, winning the Arnold Jacobs Mock Orchestral Audition at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in Canada, and placing among the top seven competitors at the Brno International Performer's Competition in the Czech Republic.

His teaching experience is equally varied, with experience as a band and orchestra director at the elementary and high school levels in addition to private studio and classroom teaching at the college level. His principal studies have been with Fritz Kaenzig, Daniel Perantoni, Harvey Phillips, and Craig Fuller.
