Eddie Galvan

Eddie Galvan is a native of Corpus Christi. He graduated from Corpus Christi HS (now Roy Miller HS) where he was an active member of the band. He pursued a college education at Texas AEI University in Kingsville (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville), earning a Bachelor of Music degree in 1952 and a Master of Music Degree in 1953.

Galvan's teaching career began with positions at junior high schools in Premont, Refugio and Corpus Christi. In 1961 Galvan returned to his alma mater (Roy Miller HS) as director of bands. Over the next fourteen years, Galvan's bands earned consistent Sweepstakes Awards, numerous honors at the Corpus Christi Buccaneer Days Music Festivals, was selected the Outstanding Band in its class at both the Six Flags Over Texas and Houston Baptist Music Festivals and performed at the 1968 Cotton Bowl Half Time Pageant. Galvan was presented the Victors' Trophy by the legendary Dr. William Revelli at the Six Flags Festival and was asked to return to be guest conductor for the 1969 Cotton Bowl Pageant.

From 1973 to 1985 Galvan was Coordinator of Music and later Director of Personnel for the Corpus Christi ISD. In 1985 he accepted a position as Associate Professor of Music and director of bands at Corpus Christi State University (now Texas A&M University Corpus Christi) and served until 1991.

From 1991-1999 Galvan was the Dean of Music/Principal for the M. Trevino Fine Arts Academy in Laredo, Texas. The school was named for a former Laredo ISD Superintendent who was the primary catalyst for the establishment of the school. Mr. Trevino's vision was to establish a collaborative fine arts enrichment program with Laredo ISD's three parent high schools. In the music department, students are personally interviewed and auditioned to determine admission into the program. While continuing to retain membership in parent school music programs, these students receive enriched courses in applied music theory, composition, music history and literature, and computer literacy and midi-technology.

Galvan has been an active member of TMEA serving as Vice President of the Band Division. He was president of TBA in 1973 and was selected as Texas Bandmaster of the Year in 1996. He is also a member of TMAA, Phi Beta Mu and was among the first group to be inducted into the Phi Beta Mu Hall of Fame.

Galvan was inducted into the Alumnus Wall of Honor at Texas A&I University, Kingsville, the Alumnus Hall of Honor at Roy Miller HS, the Texas A&M University Band Hall of Honor in Kingsville and as a distinguished alumnus in the Roy Miller School Hall of Fame. In 2003, the Roy Miller HS Band Hall was dedicated the Eddie Galvan Music Center.

The basis of Galvan's teaching philosophy is that "students must first and foremost be good solid citizens in order to be eligible for any band program. Students must understand the importance of having self-respect, respect for teachers and authority figures, parents/guardians and peers." He adds that "students do not have to enter the band program with great musical abilities." In his judgement, good student-citizens who desire to learn can be taught to be able musicians. Galvan is especially proud of his many - former students who have selected music education as a profession.
