If posture is important in developing musical skills, it's worth doing it right. If scales are fundamental to mastering the art of music making, it's worth doing them right. If proper behavior is a requisite of efficient and effective rehearsals, it's worth doing it right. Over the years I have come to realize how important my 21 years in the Army Band program were. There was always a sense of accomplishment; time and freedom to learn my trade, and I strongly believe I served my country to the best of my abilities. I highly recommend any of the military band programs. The opportunities for learning and leadership are there for anyone who has the desire to be the best they can be. Sound familiar?
It is important to remember that the educational process is only as good as the individual teacher standing in front of a group of students at any given moment in time. A band director's preparation for rehearsal is essential to the success of any musical ensemble. That preparation includes such basic elements as making sure the room or marching band practice field is set up and ready for rehearsal.
